GitLab provides code hosting with CI/CD, issue tracking and deployment built into the same product, and can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure.

Self-hosting is its distinguishing capability: organizations with data residency requirements or air-gapped environments can run the full platform internally, which hosted-only competitors cannot offer.

Its CI system was integrated from early on rather than added later, which shows in how pipelines are defined alongside the code rather than configured separately.
