Gitee is a Chinese code hosting platform, providing repositories, issues and CI with fast access from within China.

Access speed is the practical reason for its use: international code hosting can be slow or unreliable from mainland China, which affects everything from cloning a repository to pulling dependencies during a build.

It also serves as the hosting platform for many domestic open-source projects, and some Chinese organizations require code to be hosted domestically.
