Dianping is a Chinese review platform for restaurants and local services, and its ratings carry real weight in purchase decisions.

Its long history means depth of accumulated reviews: for an established restaurant there may be years of photographs and written accounts, which is more informative than a star average.

As with any platform where ratings affect revenue, review manipulation is a persistent problem, and reading a spread of recent reviews is more reliable than the headline score.
